of the technical field or regulatory context in question. Their role
goes far beyond simply meeting a regulatory requirement: they directly
contribute to the control of the measurement process and the credibility
of decisions based on analytical results.
Changes in the regulatory framework—particularly the 2016 publication
of ISO 17034—have helped clarify and harmonise the applicable requirements
for reference material producers. This development strengthens confidence
in the materials available on the market, while reaffirming a fundamental
principle: the suitability of a reference material for a specific
application remains the responsibility of the user.
