4. Atmospheric phase
Calculating a reentry trajectory requires numerical methods of optimization (to find the control law α, μ) and integration (to propagate the differential equations of motion). These cumbersome methods do not provide a physical understanding of the phenomena. When designing a vehicle or preparing a mission, simple analytical models are needed to quickly assess performance and define the re-entry scenario.
