At the design stage of a new ship, destined to be operational for some thirty years, the telecoms system is just one part of a larger whole, including the hull, propulsion, weapons, etc. The telecoms system itself is made up of a network infrastructure, various applications carrying all types of information (software belonging to the sub-systems forming part of the telecoms system, and using data, voice or other information).
