Essential to today's economy, global trade, mainly based on freight transport, has multiple environmental effects. Today, the transport sector is responsible for around 15% of global CO ₂ emissions (figure 14 ). Roughly 40 Gt of CO ₂ are emitted each year as a result of human activities, 80% of which are linked to the use of fossil fuels, and 10% to deforestation and part of cement production.
