4. Eco-driving in the vehicle
The origins of eco-driving training aids can be traced back to the very process of learning to drive, with methods that were both rudimentary and sometimes effective. Some instructors would place a glass half-filled with water on the dashboard to force the learner to drive smoothly. Inspired by this image, and following the first oil crisis in 1970, carmakers began offering eco-driving assistance systems based on a bar of LEDs colored from green to red, representing instantaneous fuel consumption (figure 10 ).
