This article details the internal and external stakes which must lead an organization ("organism" in ISO terms), whatever its nature into designing an Environmental Management System consistent with the standard ISO 14001:2026, then provides a brief description of this standard with detailed comments on its requirements, pointing out the changes with ISO 14001:2015. These changes are not very important except for the structure which is then identical for all management systems whatever may be the covered field; also the new version includes explicitely climate change and biodiversity protection.
Material reversibility refers to the ability of a flow to return to a functional state after transformation, without loss of purity or formation of mixtures that are difficult to separate. Natural cycles (CHNOPS) provide a model based on reversible transformations and efficient looping. Industrial processes diverge when physical, chemical, or structural dissipations occur. This article proposes a diagnostic method to identify irreversibilities, compares several materials, and defines design conditions that promote separability, recoverable purity, and the limitation of irreversible transformations. Dedicated indicators complement existing approaches.
The purpose of this report is to provide an initial overview of constructive approaches to the challenges posed by incorporating sustainable development into the built environment. How can we ensure a contribution to sustainable development? If the concept of sustainable development is taken in its most immediate sense, then it must be acknowledged that any action undertaken from this perspective must first and foremost be resource-efficient. The prudent use of available resources is, in fact, a guarantee of “responsibility” toward future decision-making capacity.
This article discusses the development of corporate environmental civil liability, whose is a corporate’s obligation to repair ecological damage. It shows the conditions under which this liability can be engaged. Currently this is essentially present in national law. This is an administrative police in European Union law. International law is still quite timid for the time being. Recognition of the due diligence makes it possible to envisage an increase in the corporate's environmental civil liability at all levels. A civil liability is emerging in the context of climate change.
Operationalizing AI ethics is a major challenge for organizations. The Amazon, COMPAS and Obermeyer cases illustrate how AI systems can produce systemic discrimination despite the absence of malicious intent. This article proposes an operational framework for transforming ethical principles into concrete risk and impact management practices, based on the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard. We first show how this standard aligns with GDPR requirements in Europe and Law 25 in Quebec. We then detail the integration of risk and impact management at different stages of the AI systems lifecycle. Finally, we present operational tools (lifecycle × risks × controls matrix, indicators, organization) and a progressive roadmap for implementation.
The transition towards more sustainable food systems implies integrating solutions to environmental issues in agrifood sector. This paper presents an ecodesign approach that aims to improve environmental performance of food, bioproducts, bioprocesses and food processes while integrating their use quality. This approach is based on an iterative process involving environmental assessment, identification of ecodesign axes and the implementation of the more relevant and/or promising options. The approach is illustrated by the ecodesign of the stabilized lactic acid bacteria production system.
In a context of raw materials shortage, awareness of a need for environmental protection, and pressure from regulations, the chemical industry is showing a growing interest in biosolvents made from renewable raw materials. Bio-based solvents offer an alternative to fossil resources, preventing health, safety and environmental hazards. After a reminder of the background to the solvents market, this paper presents the main biosolvent categories known for their industrial applications, and the different strategies for the design and selection of biosolvents meeting given specifications.
Calcium phosphate-based biomaterials (CaP) have developed considerably over the last decades due to their excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. The main calcium phosphates used as biomaterials as well as their synthesis routes and their physico-chemical properties are described. Various processing techniques and a few applications are detailed: bioceramics, coatings, cements and composites. Biological properties and standards are also presented.
Evolutionary Algorithms (EA), including the most famous ones, Genetic Algorithms (GA), are based on Darwin’s theory. These problem-solving or stochastic optimization methods mimic in a very simplified manner the capabilities of populations of living organisms to adapt to their environments thanks to selection and genetic inheritance mechanisms. This paper provides a brief panorama of artificial Darwinism and its varied and numerous applications.
The apatites are a family of inorganic compounds. In particular, calcium phosphate apatites are of particular interest in the biomaterials field. This article focuses on nanocrystalline apatites that are, for example, present in bone and dentin, and for which synthetic analogs called “biomimetic apatites” can be prepared and used for biomedical applications. Various aspects are addressed concerning their specific characteristics, their physicochemical and thermodynamic properties, their preparation and processing, and their biomedical use mainly as bone substitutes, but also in nanomedicine, for diagnosis or for therapy.
