In view of climate change (more frequent droughts, resulting in lower groundwater levels) and global population growth, water resource management is a major challenge. It has become essential to maintain the "good ecological and chemical status" of aquatic environments. The need to preserve water resources is dictated by the Framework Directive 2000/60/EC of October 23, 2000. In France, the law of December 30, 2006 reinforces the obligation to maintain and restore aquatic environments.
