The concept of science intelligence (SI) is modelled on that of business intelligence (BI). It was conceived in 2009, when it was realized that the equivalent of business intelligence for the economy did not exist in the scientific sector.

The two sectors, economics and the so-called "hard" sciences, have in common an extreme richness and dynamism in terms of information flows: nowadays, it's not so much a question of knowing whether information exists, but rather of knowing how to capture the information that is most strategic for the company's future, and how best to exploit it in order to effectively influence the decision-making of stakeholders. What these two sectors also have in common is their dependence on highly structured, paid-for sources of information, mainly databases published by commercial publishers, although this is less and less the case....
