1. Sustainable development

Sustainable development is defined as :

Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, and that takes into account environmental, social and economic dimensions in a perspective of equity.

This definition was inspired by the Brundtland Report, Our Common Future, published in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), chaired by Gro Harlem Brundtland, then Prime Minister of Norway. This report, which served as the basis for the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 (Box 1), popularized the term "sustainable development"
