This article details the internal and external stakes which must lead an organization ("organism" in ISO terms), whatever its nature into designing an Environmental Management System consistent with the standard ISO 14001:2026, then provides a brief description of this standard with detailed comments on its requirements, pointing out the changes with ISO 14001:2015. These changes are not very important except for the structure which is then identical for all management systems whatever may be the covered field; also the new version includes explicitely climate change and biodiversity protection.
Managerial innovation has many virtues. It is a lever for taking into account innovation that goes beyond the technological dimension. This article discusses the possible transition, thanks to managerial innovation, from collaboration to cooperation in ecosystems such as competitiveness clusters or territorial economic cooperation clusters. It highlights the difficulty of assigning a tangible value to this innovation, which tends to move beyond the corporate sphere to encompass territorial and societal issues. To take this systemic approach into account, the territory must be empowering.
This article proposes possible answers to the question of financing the circular economy, drawing on practical examples and testimonials from a qualitative study. After reviewing the main sources of financing available, it highlights those that circular economy entrepreneurs use most often. The analysis also focuses on the specific barriers and obstacles that hinder access to financing in this still-emerging sector.
Driven by environmental, economic, societal and ethical concerns, the market for plant-based meat analogues is growing rapidly. This article presents the raw materials and technological processes that shape these products’ appearance, texture, cooking performance and eating quality. It also examines their nutritional quality, the health risks associated with their manufacture, and their environmental impacts. Finally, it explores consumer perceptions, adoption drivers and the regulatory framework, notably the rules governing the naming of these alternatives.
In the face of the climate emergency, the valorization of industrial and biological gases (e.g., H2, CO2, CH4) represents a strategic lever for a low-carbon circular economy. This article analyzes the potential of their bioconversion by microorganisms to produce biofuels, chemical compounds, and proteins. It presents the microbiological foundations, available processes, critical operating conditions, technological bottlenecks, and prospects for industrial integration.
The primary energy supply is still mainly provided by fossil fuels. In addition to the risks of depleting these resources which are only available in finite quantities, the world is facing the major challenge of global warming, due to greenhouse gas emissions, the main one being carbon dioxide emitted by combustion. It is therefore necessary to ensure an energy transition to low-carbon energies as soon as possible, which requires a complete transformation of the energy system. The article presents the main technologies to be deployed.
This article deals with the search for solutions in response to the challenges of sustainability and the growing demand for healthy and nutritious products in the agri-food sector. In this context, the case of the innovation approach of the Mil'Brick company is studied by examining two representative projects which focus on an evaluation of the Eco-score for one and the Nutri-score for the other in order to obtain solutions providing the best score and the display of a label displaying this score. These evaluations required the use of an LCA from the Agribalyse database developed by ADEME, online calculators in order to determine the values of the scores according to multiple parameters, followed by a parametric optimization.
The role of the contemporary engineer extends beyond technical expertise, encompassing with social and environmental challenges. This article first introduces the concept of Heterogeneous Engineering as applied to project management and corporate governance, and subsequently examines the notion of Mediating Objects, practical tools enabling engineers to foster coordination and mutual understanding among stakeholders. The combined use of these frameworks enhances the capacity of today’s engineers to address the global challenges brought about by the ecological and social transition. Numerous examples and diagrams substantiate this analysis.
This article is an introduction to the articles in the Innovation and Ecological Transition offering, as innovation processes are evolving and enriching, based essentially on the pillars of social innovation and ecological innovation. Social innovation involves new social arrangements or new products with an explicit social purpose. Ecological innovation is a process aimed at developing new products or services that reduce environmental impact; it integrates environmentally friendly practices and methods or tools such as creativity in eco-innovation, life cycle analysis or the circular economy.
The purpose of this report is to provide an initial overview of constructive approaches to the challenges posed by incorporating sustainable development into the built environment. How can we ensure a contribution to sustainable development? If the concept of sustainable development is taken in its most immediate sense, then it must be acknowledged that any action undertaken from this perspective must first and foremost be resource-efficient. The prudent use of available resources is, in fact, a guarantee of “responsibility” toward future decision-making capacity.
