The practice of advanced information retrieval therefore requires a harmonious combination of generative AIs and web engines, each approach having the shortcomings of its qualities. Generative AIs are excellent for creating content and providing synthesized answers, but they can lack precision and reliability. Search engines, on the other hand, are reliable for finding precise information or specific documents, but lack the synthesis and interaction capabilities of generative AIs.
For specific technology watch needs, requiring a deep understanding of the context and content of specific sources, conventional search engines are still more effective. They provide direct access to primary documents such as academic articles, patents, conference proceedings and all kinds of sources that generative AI has difficulty identifying.
