To set the record straight, let's start by describing Suh's understanding of the design process. As Figure 1 shows, for Suh, designing consists of two things:

• "Horizontally", this involves navigating between the functional requirements domain (FRD) and the physical parameters domain (PPD). This navigation makes it possible to associate functional requirements (FR) with physical parameters (PP). The dotted arrows indicate these associations (cross-over). These arrows are numbered according to the chronological order in which they appear during the design process;

• "Vertically", designing means detailing these requirements and parameters, i.e. building the branches of the trees within which these items are classified (EF and PP trees).
