Overview

ABSTRACT

Carbon nanotubes are long graphite cylinders with a diameter of less than 100 nm. They are potentially vital in the mechanical reinforcement of composites. This article describes the context of these composites. An initial introduction to carbon nanotubes is proposed; their structure, texture and mechanical properties are explained. A paragraph is subsequently dedicated to nanotube-reinforced polymer matrix composites (fiber reinforcement, the orientation effect, the overlapping arrangement, adhesion, etc.). Implementation details and a number of experimental samples conclude this article.

 INTRODUCTION

Carbon nanotubes are long graphitic cylinders less than 100 nm in diameter. Their one-dimensional nature, combined with the strength of the bonds between carbon atoms, gives them such exceptional mechanical properties that, since their discovery, they have been considered the nec plus ultra of reinforcements for composite materials.
