, different forms of SOM coexist in soils, both living (soil organisms) and dead. The degradation of dead organic matter by micro-organisms is variable and depends on their size. Coarse MOS (50 µm-2 mm) is most often labile: its average residence time is generally between 3 years (MOS 200 µm-2mm) and 18 years (MOS 50-200 μm).
