According to the WHO (World Health Organization), "handicap" is the term used to describe the unsuitability of an environment and its infrastructure for the specific needs of each individual.

This definition stands in stark contrast to the one that prevailed until recently: the medical approach to disability, which saw it as an intrinsic inferiority that needed to be "cured" or "repaired". Today, this concept has been overtaken by the social model of disability, which calls for the adaptation of the environment, and the re-education of society, which must be designed to meet the needs of all its members.

And it is from this social model that the notion of accessibility naturally stems: the ability of a service, object or environment to be used whatever the abilities and specificities of its users.
