1.1 Technical interoperability
Interoperability could be defined first and foremost as "the ability of a product or system, whose interfaces are fully known, to function with other existing or future products or systems, without restrictions on access or implementation", as initially expressed by the Association francophone des utilisateurs de logiciels libres (AFUL).
This would be in contrast to compatibility, which allows "two systems of different types to communicate with each other", but only with each other.
