3. Basic technical concepts of the DVB-S2 and DVB-RCS2 standards
The aim of this chapter is therefore to present the access and physical layers defined by the DVB-S2 and DVB-RCS2 standards.
The functions provided by the access layer include encapsulation and fragmentation, multiplexing, scheduling, quality of service and more. This chapter provides details of the encapsulation functions on the forward path. Synchronization, modulation and adaptive coding functions are covered in another chapter.
On the outbound link (i.e. from the satellite gateway to the user terminal), the gateway uses all available bandwidth to communicate with the remote terminals: a carrier is a single time-division multiplex where packets addressed to the terminals are transmitted successively in time....
