The Internet is a data transmission network that supports both document and message communications in delayed time, as well as real-time communications such as voice. It is ideally suited to the transmission and broadcasting of faxes, in both real-time and non-real-time modes.
Widespread Internet Protocol (IP) networks and a well-defined fax data format are two key factors in the rapid development of fax over IP (Box 3).
The concept of "unified messaging" refers to the possibility of grouping all messages (faxes, text and voice messages) in a single location: the electronic mailbox.
