Object Name Service (ONS) - A naming service for Internet objects

ONS is a service that maps an EPC code to an Internet identifier. It is described in an EPCglobal standard [GS1-ONS] and is based on the following principles:

• the object identifier (the EPC code) is converted to the Internet domain name ;

• Internet name servers have the information associated with this code.

Figure 1 shows an example of ONS resolution. The client application (installed on a computer or mobile device) retrieves the EPC code transmitted by the RFID reader. This code is converted into a URN (Uniform Resource Name) and then into a domain name. The DNS is then queried...
