In all the examples presented above, the packets sent within the flows are always exchanged between mobiles within communication range. In this section, we'll look at configurations where packets are exchanged between mobiles not necessarily within communication range. In such cases, a routing protocol is required to route the data.
5.1 Communication chain
As soon as two mobiles not within communication range want to send each other data, some mobiles in the network have to retransmit this data. If the routing protocol works correctly, and in particular does not create loops, the data will be routed along a path, also known as a chain.
