4. Applications
Segment Routing makes it possible to route a packet along a particular path, without creating states in the transit network, or requiring signaling. This opens up new applications in networks that previously used IP or MPLS/LDP. For networks that used MPLS/RSVP-TE, the majority of applications were already possible, but Segment Routing brings a number of changes.
This section explores three families of applications:
improved network response in the event of an outage;
better adaptation of traffic routing in the network ("TE" traffic engineering);
better network operation.
