The third part of this dossier presents the implementation of VoIP at home, in the office or on the move via UMTS mobile networks. In addition to the access network, VoIP can be accessed from an eclectic range of terminals, such as an analog telephone connected to a VoIP converter box, an IP telephone, a PC equipped with a softphone or a cell phone. Two trends are outlined below.

• Implementing standards

  The democratization of VoIP is based on standardized protocols and codecs such as SIP and H.323, or G.711 and G.729. These enable the interworking of equipment such as residential gateways, IP telephones, IP PBXs and VoIP platforms.
