The term Operating System (OS) has come into common usage to designate the control software on a microcomputer board, which interprets and executes the various elementary commands that the board can carry out. Located in the persistent memory part of the microcomputer (ROM, EEPROM or FLASH), it is implemented for the ROM in one of the masks used to manufacture the integrated circuit.
