Another way to categorize VPNs is to distinguish between those whose setup and operation are managed by a service provider (which we’ll call “provider-managed VPNs”) and those managed by the company itself (known as “corporate VPNs” or “in-house VPNs”). In both cases, there are advantages and disadvantages to consider.
In this case, the company handles—either directly or through a service provider—the installation, configuration, and operation of the VPNs, which are established between devices located at each site (routers, firewalls).
