Digital filters - Summary

As a general rule, there are four steps:

• solving the approximation problem to determine the filter coefficients that satisfy a given frequency template;

• choice of structure and quantization of filter coefficients into a finite number of bits ;

• quantization of filter variables, i.e. choice of word length for :

  • entrance,

  • exit,

  • intermediate memories ;

• simulation to check that the final filter meets the specified template.

Here, we focus on the first step. Step 4 is only necessary if steps 2 and 3 are implemented; however, the choice of a realization structure and quantification problems are not independent of the architecture of the computer used for practical realization.
