ATSC system (8-VSB)
Digital terrestrial television - 8-VSB and DVB-T systems

This is the system used in the United States. The synoptic diagram is shown in figure 1.

The system is a suite of equipment that adapts the baseband signals output by the MPEG-2 transport multiplexer to the terrestrial transmission channel.

The following processing is applied to the data stream:

• multiplex adaptation and patching ;

• Reed Solomon;

• external interlacing ;

• internal coding ;

• synchronization and drivers ;

• AM modulation;

• Nyquist filtering ;

• 8-VSB transmission.

The 8-VSB terrestrial transmission mode supports a useful data rate of 19.28... Mbit/s in a 6 MHz channel.
