This ancient process is also known as SLB (Side Lobe Blanking). Its purpose is to prevent very strong signals (interference, ground echoes, very close or very strong echoes) perceived by the antenna's side lobes from being picked up.
To determine whether or not the energy received comes from the main lobe, we use an auxiliary antenna with low directivity, whose pattern overlaps the main antenna's side lobes as closely as possible (figure
