6. Radar antenna characteristics
6.1 General principle
An antenna is a device that transitions and transfers waves between a guided medium and the space in which they will radiate, in both directions of propagation.
It therefore ensures :
adaptation between the "guided medium" or "waveguide" (in the general sense) and free space; when this adaptation is perfect, the transition is lossless, i.e. all the energy from the "guided medium" is radiated into space;
the distribution of radiated energy in space, which reflects the relative importance of the radiation according to the direction considered, and is characterized by the antenna's radiation pattern.
