The .NET Framework includes valuable classes, interfaces and types that speed up and optimize the development process and provide access to system functionality. To facilitate interoperability between languages, .NET Framework types are CLS (Common Language Specification) compliant and can therefore be used from any programming language whose compiler is CLS compliant.

The .NET Framework's types are the foundation on which programmers can build their own code. The .NET framework includes types that perform the following functions:
