We'll use an example to examine the essential features of COBOL.

The program chosen as an example (figure 1 ) consists in creating a documentation file, in sequential indexed organization, whose records have the format shown in figure 2 . PRV1, PRV2, PRV3 correspond to different transfer prices for ordinary orders (PRV1), quantity orders (PRV2) and internal orders (PRV3). A top 1, 2 or 3 in front of the values indicates whether the corresponding tariff is applicable.
