Developments in IT techniques over the last twenty years have made it possible to adapt IT tools to company organization (and not the other way round). The power of microcomputers and workstations, the reliability and flexibility of relational DBMSs, and the performance of networks mean that IT resources can be distributed in a way that preserves the essential, i.e. database consistency.
