2.1 What is a license
A license is a contract that sets out the conditions for guaranteeing, using, modifying, copying and distributing the software. It confers rights as well as obligations on users and developers.
These conditions may be more or less restrictive, and must comply with the relevant legislation. The existence of a license is, of course, conditional on its author holding copyright.
Copyright is an Anglo-Saxon concept. It covers only the patrimonial aspect, unlike copyright, which encompasses moral rights (the work is the expression of a person, and moral rights guarantee its protection as such).
