4. Resource allowance
A resource is any object required to run a process. The resources managed by the operating system are processors, main and secondary memory, input/output devices and communication channels. After defining the objectives of an allocation policy, we examine the problems involved in allocating the main resources.
4.1 Allocation policy objectives
A resource allocation policy must ensure that applications using the system receive a quality of service in line with their specifications. Quality of service factors depend on the resources under consideration: waiting time (average and variance), total processing time, job throughput, demand coverage rate, management overhead, etc.
