Beyond the host language approach, whereby an external program accesses the data and processing stored within a database, DBMSs extend their own mechanisms by exploiting programming languages. This makes it possible to develop processes not only in the DBMS proprietary language (PL/SQL with Oracle), but also in a programming language such as Java. For example, Oracle's DBMS offers the possibility of developing its processing with Java in a variety of ways:

• Java internal stored procedures correspond to a Java method that is compiled and interpreted within the DBMS by an internal Java infrastructure (compiler and virtual machine);

• external stored procedures in Java also correspond to a Java method, but which remains stored outside the DBMS (source code and bytecode).
