11. RTP (Real Time Protocol )
One of the problems posed by the Internet is the existence of real-time applications such as digital speech or videoconferencing. These applications require qualities of service that conventional Internet protocols cannot offer. This is why RTP was born. What's more, RTP has been designed directly for a multipoint environment. RTP will therefore be responsible for both real-time management and administration of the multipoint session.
Two intermediaries are needed: translators and mixers. The translator's function is to translate an application encoded in a certain format into another format better suited to passing through a subnetwork. For example, a videoconferencing application encoded in MPEG could be decoded and re-encoded in H.261 to reduce the amount of information transmitted.
