1. Service discovery protocols
UPnP isn't the only solution for easy hardware configuration or, more simply, for discovering services on a network. Other discovery protocols exist, each with its own specific features. The following overview enables us to put UPnP in context, and extract its specific features.
1.1 SLP: Service Location Protocol
SLP is a service discovery protocol developed by the IETF SvrLoc working group since 1999. Its aim is to define a manufacturer-independent standard for TCP/IP networks. It can operate both in a small network, using broadcast for discovery, and in an enterprise network, using service directories. It is one of the few service discovery protocols that can use both modes.
