3. CMO integrity control
CMO aging frequently results in macroscopic damage. The control methods used to reveal this damage are either optical (surface damage) or based on non-destructive methods (characterization of the CMO core). Sensors integrated into structures are currently being developed to continuously determine the conditions actually experienced by the material and assess its state of degradation.
Careful observation of the CMO enables rapid characterization of an ageing condition. Depending on the scale of observation required, visual observation methods such as binocular magnifiers, optical microscopy, SEM and TEM are used to identify cracks (location, formation, propagation) and precisely characterize fracture surfaces.
