Now that the material and its use have been presented, it's time to set out the various subjects for which laboratory investigations and studies are useful, if not indispensable. In this section, we'll look at the norms governing the use of quarried stone, characterizations relating to the choice of replacement stone in the restoration of old buildings, and finally, an understanding of the weathering phenomena that affect each building.

Like a medical procedure, these studies will lead to a diagnosis and, consequently, to an effective and lasting treatment.
