In the following examples, we perform mild, low-caustic alkalination using sodium or potassium silicate solutions with SiO
2
:Na

O or SiO
2
:K
2
O molar ratios of between 1.45 and 1.85.
In this article, we focus on the reactivity of a mineral that was at the origin of the discovery of geopolymers, namely calcined kaolinite, or metakaolinite, referred to as metakaolin or MK-750 to indicate the calcination temperature. This raw material is free of impurities, enabling simpler analysis of the alkaline geopolymerization mechanism.
