The search for new products began in the 1960s as a result of the industrial interest aroused by the first displays. The first liquid crystals with a nematic phase at room temperature were Schiff bases, whose representative product was MBBA (4-methoxy-benzylidene-4'-butyl aniline, synthesized in 1969 by Hans Kelker for Hoechst). These products were rapidly replaced by phenylbenzoates.
