5. Host matrices and associated effects
The general principle for a "host" material (a solid matrix) to
be easily doped with rare-earth ions is that, among its constituent
ions, there must be an ion with no optical transition in the desired
spectral range (neutral ion), preferably a trivalent one with an ionic
radius close to 1 Å, which is the average value for all trivalent
rare-earth ions.
