Polymeric and composite materials used in electrical engineering are designed to perform a variety of functions, such as insulation, energy storage and component protection. There are also specific properties provided by semiconductor screens or piezoelectric materials, for example.

These materials can be classified into several families:

• films used either for wrapping or for the manufacture of capacitors;

• solid materials (e.g. cable insulation);

• varnishes and enamels (wire insulation for winding) ;

• impregnation resins (glass fabric impregnated with epoxy resin).
