Some ideas for the future of ceramics in orthopedics are given: use of covalent ceramics (silicon nitride type), progress on existing ceramics, approaches at the biology/materials interface...
It might seem worthwhile to "rehabilitate" the orthopaedic uses of zirconia. Indeed, research is currently underway on this material to eliminate its susceptibility to hydrothermal ageing, which is its main weakness. This research is exploring three avenues.
