Traditional ceramics – Overview and raw materials

Anorthite

Calcium feldspar, an aluminum and calcium silicate CaAl₂Si₂O₈. In ceramics, it is a newly formed phase, often associated with gehlenite, which forms when formulations containing high levels of calcium are fired, such as in earthenware and terracotta. It is also a rock that can be used as a raw material in certain earthenware or enamel formulations.

Body

This word encompasses in ceramics very wide different meanings to describe the ceramic along the different stages of its manufacturing

• Before shaping (in this article, we speak of “ceramic body”), it is the feed entering the shaping process. According to this process it can be a slip or a clayish plastic formulation or spray dried powder

• After shaping ceramists usually speak of “green body” and then “crude body” after drying
