2. Liquid iron treatments
The various operations carried out on liquid cast iron outside the melting furnace are designed to adjust the metal's chemical composition and physico-chemical properties to specific requirements prior to casting.
Corrections are often necessary for cupola melting. This is because the chemical composition of liquid cast iron produced by this method is less precise than that of liquid cast iron produced by electric melting. The carbon and sulfur contents of cupola cast iron often need to be adjusted. Oxidizable alloying elements are affected by the passage through the hot oxidizing zones that the cast iron must pass through in the cupola furnace.
