5. Physically hardening sand casting
Moulding techniques using binder-free sand with permanent models are relatively recent. The main industrially-developed process uses silica sand, hardened by applying vacuum to the sand mass, a process known as V-Process (Vacuum-Process ).
Another process uses silica sand mixed with bentonite and water, hardened by freezing.
This process, which originated in Japan and was patented in 1971, was introduced in Europe in 1974. The sand is held in place between two plastic films, sealing the top and bottom surfaces of each part of the mold.
