We will only deal here with metallic and organic coatings.
Mineral phosphate coatings have already been discussed.
In the case of metal coatings, however, a wide range of metals and alloys can be applied.
In most cases, coatings are designed to act as a barrier to corrosion.
The most commonly used coating is galvanizing, which involves hot-dipping in a bath of molten zinc.
