Without going back over all the aspects of environmental control in the steel industry, which are the subject of other articles (see, in particular, those by J. Raguin and ), energy requirements and the savings that can be made have a direct impact on an important subject i.e. the production of carbon dioxide CO₂ , a subject of well-known controversy but for which we will limit ourselves to the effect of each of the steel production processes, their energy consumption and the possible savings on this CO₂ production.

The basic data we will be using are shown in tables 15 and 16. They are in fairly good agreement with those of the IISI or those of a recent American study
