The choice of cylinder must meet the following requirements:

• sufficient tensile strength to withstand rolling forces;

• sufficiently durable surface finish;

• maximum wear resistance, with the proviso that the cylinder must be re-machinable.

Broadly speaking, steel, which is more resistant than cast iron, will be used for large trains or high-pressure roughing cages.

Cast iron, more fragile but more resistant to wear, will be used for intermediate trains and finishing cages.
