1. Cylinders and tooling
The choice of cylinder must meet the following requirements:
sufficient tensile strength to withstand rolling forces;
sufficiently durable surface finish;
maximum wear resistance, with the proviso that the cylinder must be re-machinable.
Broadly speaking, steel, which is more resistant than cast iron, will be used for large trains or high-pressure roughing cages.
Cast iron, more fragile but more resistant to wear, will be used for intermediate trains and finishing cages.
Wherever possible, GS (spheroidal graphite) cast irons are used in roughing mills, as they are more resistant...
