2. Solid-state treatment: case-hardening or solid carburizing
This process is mentioned here only as a reminder. It is practically no longer used industrially. However, carburizing powders are still marketed for one-off jobs and operations that exceed the capacity of atmospheric furnaces.
The principle is to embed the parts to be treated in a solid charcoal-based cement, the whole being held in a closed box heated to case-hardening temperature (900 to 950°C).
